Light enough to forget you are wearing it, 13 June 2005

I love the light weight of this headset. I forget I am wearing it. And I can leave my phone in my handbag or the pocket of my cargo pants and still get and place calls. Very convenient. I have been known to lose the signal momentarily when I leave the phone in my bedroom and go downstairs and outside - but if I stay in the same end of the house I don't lose the signal.

Great sometimes, horrible others, 12 June 2005

I've been using the 850 daily for about a month now and I'm taking it back. When conditions are ideal (I'm within 10 feet of the phone, I have excellent service coverage, and my ear with the 850 on it is toward the phone, no wind, no background noise) it works really well. When any combination of the parenthetical above occurs say goodbye to the clarity on both ends. I'm tiring of my friends saying take that stupid headset off, I'm getting every other syllable. I had high hopes, but the technology's just not there yet. At least not with this headset. I think the long boom headsets are bound to be better. That's what I'm going to try now. Fair warning on this headset. Looks cool, but who cares if it doesn't hold its own?

Treo 650 compatibility, 10 June 2005

Reply to the person who claimed didn't work with TReo 650: Works perfectly with Treo 650. (both 810 and 850). synched in about 5 seconds. performance: Moto 810/850 are my first bt headsets, but fairly good. not as good as wired, slightly staticky but I am able to talk within 25 feet or so of the headset. No wires makes up for the slight degradation in performance compared to wired headsets.

Much better than the Jabra BT800!, 09 June 2005

I bought the HS850 after trying TWO other BT headsets. One was a "lookalike" version (off-brand)that didn't have as many features (I returned it) and the other was the top-of-the-line Jabra BT800 (which was $50 more than this one, and not as good! I also returned it).

I am very pleased with the features of this headset. I use it with my Motorola V710 phone and the sound quality is just fine. My husband sounded clear to me, and he told me I sounded clear to him. I had two different people tell me they couldn't understand me when I used the Jabra.

I am extremely happy with the folding boom feature to answer a call. This means my headset can remain "off" and my phone will ring AS USUAL when I receive a call. I then just unfold the boom and pop it on my ear! The headset automatically connects to my phone and answers the call! To end the call, I just take it off and fold it back up.

When I used the other two headsets, I had to leave them turned "on" all the time in order to use them, and then, to my dismay, my phone didn't ring! Well, it did ring INSIDE the HEADSET, but since I don't want to walk around wearing the thing, I didn't hear it ring! SO that was a major bummer with the other headsets.

Since the HS850 didn't come with a lanyard to wear around my neck, I just hooked it onto a regular old neck strap that I had used previously to wear a name badge. You can get those things anywhere, they are sometimes used to hang keys on. I used some needle-nosed pliers to squeeze the clip enough to slide on the headset hook. You can bet it won't fall off!

The voice dialing function works as described, I just tap once on the middle button and I hear my phone say "Say a command" and go from there. I haven't learned all the special tapping commands yet, as I haven't needed anything more than voice dial and pick up/hang up a call. I plan to go through my manual a few more times to get familiar with all the other features, but for normal use, you can easily use it from the start.

The charge seems to be good, especially since the headset stays "off" most of the time. I fully charged it before using the first time and the blue LED turns off when the headset is fully charged, so that was nice. I was especially pleased to notice that it has the VERY SAME charger plug/port as my V710, so the car charger that I already have for the phone should work fine for this headset. They also have those "Y" chargers out there for charging both at once.

Also, I find this to be very comfortable to wear on my ear. I do have rather large ears, but it doesn't "cut" into the back of my ear. It is easy to open up the hook and slip into place, and it feels nice and snug when on, it's easy to forget I'm wearing it. And although I don't mind the flashing LED while I'm using it, the manual says you can turn it off by changing the setting for that.

In all, I am very pleased with the design and features/function of this headset! It sure is nice to be free of that old wire "ear bud" I have been using for years!

Everything works, 05 June 2005

I have a Siemens SX66 (yes, the PDA-phone that supposedly works with no Bluetooth headset out there), and I'm very happy with this headset.

It's reasonably comfortable, has great sound volume, even in noisy environments, people say I sound clear even when in an automobile while driving, and it synchronized right away with the SX66.

Most importantly, with the boom mic to flip, you can turn this unit on and off in a fraction of a second. My SX66 recognizes the HS850 headset within a second (I'm at the latest Bluetooth v1.1 driver from Siemens/Microsoft - I tried applying the patch from Siemens' website, but the phone was already at the latest version).

In short, everything works well, and the ambient noise cancellation features seem to work well, according to the people I'm talking to.

I haven't run this to the point it has completely lost power - I don't know how long it lasts. At least 3-4 days of idle and 4-5 hours of talk time.

No Go On the Treo 650, 03 June 2005

I have a Treo 650, on Sprint PCS, with a firmware update of 1.08

For the most part, I actually like this headset because it is very comfy, and people seem to hear me well (the comfort is a big deal, as I often wear glasses)

however, this headset takes a long time to connect with the T650 --- a good 7 to 10 seconds on most calls (and by then, most people have hung up)

in addition, the volume is okay in the car (or other isolated places) but forget about using it outside or in noiser environments

I've heard that it works well with Moto products though ---- for Treo 650 users, I highly recommend the Scala 500, which has fast connection times and loud volume

happy shopping!!!

not bad..., 31 May 2005

Nice form factor, I like that flipping the boom open turns it on. Earpiece could be a bit tighter, but it fits pretty well otherwise. Sound quality is not as good as I had hoped, but still very usable. Beats the hell out holding the phone up to my ear for hours on end.

Won't work with Treo 650, 27 May 2005

I bought this to use with my TREO 650. It will synch but not operate as a headset. I am taking it back and getting something that is recommended by Palm even though the reviews here are the best for this item.

No good with the V3 Razr, 25 May 2005

I bought this at the smallest "top of the line" Bluetooth headset, not have used a BT headset. Before. While it was comfortable and I could easily navigate the features, I had two complaints that made it impractical and useless.

1) My primary complaint is that it does not stay synced with the V3. I am not sure if this is an issue with other phones, but I will say that with my wife's v551, there seems to be no problem. When the headset is not engaged in a call, it disconnects and reconnects every minute or so, giving me the annoying static in my ear every time it connects. I didn't think this should be a problem, since both products are made by Motorola, but even with tech support the issue could not be resolved. This is why I say in the title that it is not good for the V3. It might be fine with other phones, as my wife's v551 seemed fine.

2) The boom is too close to the ear speaker. I was told by many people with whom I was on the phone that they could hear themselves "echo". I could resolve this by turning down the earpiece speaker. That is fine while I am at home in my office, but if I was in the car, where there is more ambient noise, turning it down led to ME not being able to hear clearly. This is a problem that I had when I tried it with my wife's phone as well... so this is not really a "fixable" problem, as far as I can see.

Both of these conditions were eliminated by purchasing the Jabra BT-250. While it is not as small and convenient to carry, it retained all the great features of the HS850, without the annoying problems listed above.

Again, this may not be the case with other phones, but I have to give a VERY negative report with the Motorola V3

It's ok, convenient, 24 May 2005

I splurged and bought this earpiece to go along with my new Motorola RAZR V3. This earpiece really is a little complicated to learn how to use. When looking at the manual, I am overwhelmed by the description of what certain beeps the headset makes means. The headset beeps and I never really know what the beep and the interval of beeps mean (I probably have to keep the small manual in my purse). The audio sounds good, although it is not as good as actually having the phone to my ear. The battery works fine too. It last for about four days. I wonder what happens when the battery needs to be replaced. I honeslty only bought this earpiece because I am afraid of walking around with the RAZR in my hand (it seems very delicate, I tend to drop things). Overall, this headset works fine for me.
